Manchester United started strong and could have scored in the first five itself when Rashford missed a routine header. Leicester have had an unusual run of
A misplaced pass from the home side landed on the feet of Pogba, who produced a brilliant pass to Rashford. This time around he made no mistake and after a beautiful first touch, fired the ball in the back of the net.
Things settled down after the first goal for a while and it was then Leicester who looked more like the team to score next. They were getting ahead quite easily from the right side, where Ashley Young had a very busy day. He was caught several times and if not for the two CB’s, United could have been in trouble more often than not.
Both teams had quite a share of fouls and 4 yellow were given in the first half itself. Lingard being the one taking it for the team, when Leicester got away on the counter-attack.
It has been over 5 years since, United lost a game in which they were leading at half time. But the last team to do so were Leicester themselves and they started off very aggressively in the second half and could have scored in the first minute itself. They had the majority of possession in the first 15 minutes, following which United started to slow down in order to get the game rolling.
Meanwhile, DeGea had made two great saves from set pieces, showing once again why he is probably the best in his position. Manchester United continued to have the opportunity every now and then but was not clinical enough to get that all-important second goal.
In between all those hustles, Matic and Mendy could have both got their second yellow but somehow escaped. Both managers opted to go for attacking options from the bench in form of Okazaki/Iheanacho and Martial/Lukaku respectively. But the game seemed destined for a draw, unlike the previous encounter when Harry got one back in the 94th
David DeGea: Again at his attentive best, pulled out two world class saves to hold on to the 1 goal lead Manchester United had. => 8
Ashely Young: Looked troubled at the right. With Dalot still not ready to be the first choice RB, United certainly need one. =>4
Eric Bailly: If not for his carelessness, he is probably the best CB at United. Looked comfortable for most of the game. Should seal the spot alongside Lindelof. =>6
Victor Lindelof: Continued his recent stint of solid performance at the back. Looked good both at the back and when going forward.=>7
Luke Shaw: Produced a beautiful cross which Rashford should have scored. Was more than decent throughout the game. =>6
Matic: Certainly plays well alongside Herrera. Won some important balls but could have got a red today. =>6
Herrera: Is the bridge between Matic and Pogba. Gives his 200% everytime he is on the pitch. =>7
Pogba: The creative mind of Manchester United. Pulled of a brillaint assist for the goal. Gave away the ball twice easily but overall was the best player on the pitch. =>7
Alexis: Showed glimes of what he is capable of but still not making impact like he should be. =>5
Rashford: Scored the only goal of the match but missed a straight header and ended up wasting one of United’s counter attack. =>7
Lingard: Not at his fluent best but still adds a lot of movement to the United’s game. Looked really tired towards the end. =>6
Jones was brought in the dyeing stage to prevent the lead and did not have much time. Lukaku could not make the desired impact post his introduction while Martial looked threating moving in from the left.
Well fought three points for Manchester United, who have now certainly started to improve at the back as well. Solskjaer would have welcomed a second goal to finish the game but would be certainly happy with the attitude shown to get to 8
Top 4 certainly looks a possibility now for Manchester United with the gap being just two points. Onto the next one away from home against Fulham.
