Manchester United’s recent defensive form and lack of a decisive figure at the back demands a central defender signing and this is exactly one area which they can look to upgrade in the January transfer window. Even in the recent summer window Manchester United were clearly looking in for a defender but nothing was ever materialized and Jose was particularly upset about it till he was in charge at the club.
With the transfer window finally open, here we look at 5 central defenders that Manchester United can buy in January 2019.
United were totally in for him in the summer when he was available for around 60 70 millions but with not long left in his contract Manchester United can finally get him for a bargain price of around 25 million pounds. Tall, strong and extremely good with on feet, Toby is of the best defenders in the league and can even have grace the armband as well. He has been in the league for nearly 5 years now hence won’t take any time settling in. With contract offers from Spurs and rising interest from PSG as well, United have to be quick if they want to obtain his services.
Aged 25, Harry is yet to be reach his prime and still has impressed everyone with his skills specially with England in the recently concluded World Cup. He was one of the only few players who impressed in Hull City’s only season in the league in 16-17 and gained immediate transfer to Leicester following Hull’s relegation. Again a proven Premier League player but yes lacks the leadership skills which United might be looking for
Although 32, Godin is still one of the best central defender in the world and is the backbone of the Athletico Madrid’s defensive lineup which is considered to be the strongest. Release clause of 20 million for a player of his caliber is a lottery but the only thing which can rule out this move is Godin himself. He has been vocal about his love for the club and fans and it would be interesting if some how United can tempt him to move to England.
Having established himself as one of the best defenders in the world, Varane still has age on his side and is yet to peak. Already a world cup winner with France, and Champions league winner thrice with Real Madrid, Varane is certainly going to fill all the missing gaps in the United defense. Considering the way Perez deals we can easily agree that United will have to pay a record breaking fees for a defender to get him.
Considered to be the next big name in football, Koulibaly is one of the most fearsome and heavily built defender in the game & has been the wall of Nopoli’s defense. A great passes & header of the ball, Koulibaly can quickly convert defense into attack which are the characteristic of an ideal United defender. With a rumored price tag of around 120 million, United might wait for the permanent manager to take charge before spending such amount but their interest in him is known since Jose and they might still go for him considering him an asset for any manager.
There are numerous other relatively young & existing defenders whom United have been linked to but considering the appointment of care take manager in Solskjær, United will be looking into bringing someone more experienced in January who they believe could replicate the likes of Stamp and Vidic and control and lead their defense.
Go ahead and comment whom you would like to be United number 1 choice to pair with either Lindelof or Bailly to bring in that stability back.
