What a start for Manchester United under the new regime of Ole Gunnar Solskjær scoring 5 goals for first time since the farewell game of Sir Alex which was nearly six years ago. A lot of positives to take from that one specially the freedom and confidence which seemed to have taken over the entire team.
The first half was fairy tail start for Solskjær where United went on to score 3 away goals for the first time since November last year. The football was not flawless but it was much better than what we have seen in this season and every Manchester United fan can confirm that. The entire team had freedom to express and be aggressive. Lindelof having two goal scoring chances from open play in the game suggest the change which has been brought into the system at the club and this is what we have been craving for long.
Cardiff being so compressed in their positioning helped as well which gave Matic lot of spaces in the middle to control the game and allowing Pogba to do what he does the best. Giving Pogba the freedom and balance at the back is what makes this team clicks and his three assists today prove the impact he has on the creativity part. He was good and we can expect him to only improve in the second half of the season under Solskjær.
United went into the half time break with 2 goal lead and I was really happy with the approach in the second half where we tried to control the game and looked to score and not to defend and hold on to
the lead as we did in the past.
All are offensive players Pogba, Martial, Rashford and Lingard contributed in the goals and this is what we expect from them, coming out and playing with that flair. Rashford opened the scoring with a free kick in the third minute of the game which was followed by Herrera goals which went in after a deflection. Martial then scored the third of night with an absolutely fantastic team goal, followed by a penalty and then right at the end it was a perfect through ball from Pogba to find Lingard, who scored United’s fifth and his second of the night.
Cardiff City did not have much chances and to be fair were quite poor today. Their only goal came through the penalty which was awarded following the hand ball from Rashford. They had only more scoring chance in the second half which was saved brilliantly by De Gea.
All and all it was an original Manchester United type of performance and it seems United have found the problem which they had from their past itself and look what a smile can do. Yes it was Cardiff and we don’t need to over hype it but hell yeah we have scored 5 goals and there is no reason not to celebrate and be loud about it.
Glory Glory Man United.
